Safety
Slings are generally very safe to use, so long as they are well manufactured, have accurate, clear instructions for use and are being used in line with those instructions.
Most crucially, they must be used in a way that keeps babies’ airways open & clear. The phrasing we typically use to describe this in consultations is that your baby should be:
High
Tight
In Sight
You may also be familiat with the ‘TICKS’ safety mnemonic, which is designed to help you to remember the 5 key checks to make sure your baby can breathe well when in a sling.
If you’re in any doubt whatsoever, feel your baby is slumping down in the sling, breathing strangely or ‘noisily’ or have any other concerns at all, take them out of the sling immediately. Having made sure that your baby is well, book in to see us for a consultation before using the sling again. We offer the first 15 minutes for free, so that a safety check is accessible to as many parents as possible. We are also always happy to signpost to further reliable safety information and advice, or to other local sling consultants nearer to you.
We’re so happy to see you as many times as you need to be sure your baby is safe so please never be embarrassed or worried to reach out for support. Here are some key safety points for you to be aware of:
We also answer many of your safety questions in our FAQ’s so have a look and pop us a message if you dont find your answer there.
